Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over a thousand years, starting when it was chosen as the home of Emperor Kanmu's court in 794. This is where many cultural customs and religious traditions got their start, and historical events that unfolded here affected the entire country.
Kyoto is best known as the nation's cultural and historical heart, having served as the imperial capital for over 1,000 years (794–1868). It is world-renowned for its thousands of classical Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, stunning gardens, traditional geisha districts (like Gion), and refined Kaiseki dining.
