We’ve Come A Long Way…
For several years, Ed Baines had envisioned a ski club for
Brevard County. In 1983, Ed and his wife, Polly, along with the
McRees and Nohrrs, decided to form a ski club. Thus, Space
Coast Ski Club was born. Ed became the first president and
Polly created the newsletter, "The Snowbird".
In 1984, their innovative idea of a club brochure was first
printed. The brochure promoted the next year’s trips while
capturing the fun of the previous year in photographs. To this
day, the brochure continues to preserve memories and provides a
history of the destinations the Space Coast Ski Club has
traveled.
In the beginning, the Club grew around an annual trip to
Snowmass, Colorado.
The first year, 52 people went to Snowmass and 97 the following
year. Before long, the club added more trips as members wanted
to ski Vail, Steamboat, Park City and Jackson Hole to name a
few. In 1993, the club ventured on its first trip to Europe -
Kitzbuhel, Austria. It was also in 1993, the club became one of
the charter members of the
Florida Ski Council.
In 1997, the Space Coast Ski Club offered nine ski trips
including Aosta, Italy and New Zealand! These new horizons gave
way to an expanding membership of avid skiers, snowboarders and
travel enthusiasts. Today, there is virtually no major ski
resort in North America the club has not visited. Further, we
have skied Canada, South America and, in 2002, a ski trip to
Japan became a reality!
As the Space Coast Ski Club moves further into the new
millennium, we find there are countless more places to ski and
see all over the globe and, even still, more here at home. The
club’s membership includes people from every part of the country
as members want family and friends living near and far to
explore the world together. It remains the desire of the club
to provide ski and travel opportunities where great memories
will be made in individual lives.
None of this would have happened without the enthusiasm of the
original founders of Space Coast Ski Club. We are
grateful they took the initiative to create the Space Coast
Ski Club. At the same time, there have been countless board
members, trip leaders, and volunteers who contributed greatly to
the success of the club. If it were not for every person who
ever raised a hand for over 25 years, and said, “I’ll do
that”, we would not have a club today. May we offer a huge
“Thank you!” to each of you, known and unknown, for your energy
and work. It is the hope of all those involved today that we
can look back in 25 more years and be proud to have been part of
an organization that brought people together through the
adventure of travel.
Let the adventures continue for us all!
