Adriatic and Greek Isles Cruise

Adriatic and Greek Isles Cruise

May 1-8, 2010

Greek trip

The Space Coast Ski Club took to cruising in 2010. A group of 48 people left on May 1 from Venice, Italy on Costa Victoria on a 7 night cruise to the Greek Isles. The cruisers were a group of fun people who came from all directions. We had 3 sets of sisters, a Mother and daughter, cousins, a group that works together in Venice, Florida and a group that met in the Trailblazers. We also had a couple on their honeymoon, friends from Junior high, a group of women who exercise together, and a calendar “boy” in a calendar used as a fundraiser for charity. Most participants had traveled in parts of Europe before and after the cruise. Most stayed in Venice for 2 nights after the cruise and enjoyed the wonderful city with all of its’ smells, tastes, and sounds. Many toured the Morano glass factory, sipped wine in Saint Mark’s Square while listening to music and took gondola rides. One lucky foursome went to a famous restaurant on the water called “Harry’s Bar” and spotted Billy Joel who speaks fluent Italian! It is a magical city.

Who ever thought that the trip might not go due to a volcano in Iceland? We certainly worried about it. Many of our group did have trouble getting home due to the volcano re-erupting. After delays in Rome, our flight actually flew over Iceland giving one side of the plane a great view of the volcano that has caused so much trouble for travelers.

Who ever thought that the itinerary of the cruise would need to be changed due to demonstrations in Greece? Ours did. Even though our date for going into Athens was changed, we were still whisked out of the Acropolis due to expected trouble later in the day. As always, travel is full of adventures planned and unplanned.

The group particularly enjoyed all ports of call including Corfu, Santorini, Mykonos, and Dubrovnik. They were all beautiful and unique to each other! The only complaint was we needed more time! For many, it was a chance to get an overview of places we want to go back for more than a few hours.

Carla Constantino, Judy and Ty Harris led us in yoga and over 20 of our group were sweating together! This was helpful in keeping all the food we were eating from landing around our waist. Although the food wasn’t as good as you might expect on a cruise, none of us went hungry and we all delighted in having fabulous Italian gelato everyday (some of us, more than once a day).

I truly enjoyed sitting on the back of the ship in the early evening watching the water and the scenery. Most of all, I personally enjoyed each and every one of the people that went on the trip and hope to see you again soon!
