Park City Trip
Report
Space Coast Ski
Club took a group of 43 to Park City this year. Our Orlando group of 35 arrived
in Salt Lake early and just ahead of a new winter storm. The bad news was the
storm closed down the lifts on the day of our arrival because of high winds,
lightning, thunder, etc. The good news was nobody in our group planned to ski
the first day and we had fresh powder to ski the next 2 days. With warm sunny
days thereafter, we ended up with 5 great days of skiing. And with 3 ski areas
to choose from, each day the après ski discussion was which was the best area
and who had the best day. Several in our group changed their minds on the best
area on a daily basis. Everybody was a winner no matter the choice made! Our
group loved having 3 large ski resorts within 15 minutes of each other to choose
from each day. It was an ideal vacation destination.
Besides the great
skiing options, Park City is also known for great dining options. We had a group
social our first night at Fuego’s Bistro and Pizzeria. With the snow storm
brewing, it was a bit of a challenge to get everyone there but we all still had
a great time. On Tuesday night, we had our group dinner at Butcher’s Chophouse
off Main Street. If the size of the salads at Fuego did not clue us in,
Butcher’s made it clear that not only did Park City serve great food but plenty
of it too!
In addition to the
great skiing and food, there were other unique things to do too. Only Dave
Kiewit made a fearless run down the 2002 Olympic bobsled run going 70+ MPH and
up to 5 Gs in the curves. His tender back clued him in on the 5 Gs part.
Several of our group also took a ride down the Alpine Slide at the base of the
Park City ski area. Think of this as a mountain roller coaster with little
individual cars. After the first couple curves, most stayed off the brakes and
let the cars go full speed down the rails for a chilling, thrilling ride. On the
cultural side, there were many galleries to shop at along the historic Main
Street. A small group took a tour of Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City,
getting some insight on the Latter Day Saints church and the history of the
region.
By
weeks end, there were a few bumps and bruises but no broken bones. We all
learned to be patient with the free town shuttle system. And we all came away
with more good memories of sharing a great ski vacation with new and renewed
friends.
